Chapter 23

Over the next hour, Brian watched as Kate settled into the sofa, and read what Lucas had written, her eyes going over the text diligently. She asked him a few questions, and he answered, and this went back and forth. While Lucas and Kate were otherwise engaged, Brian stood up and stretched. For a moment, Kate’s glance whipped up to him, and then she was back to focusing on the laptop, but there was a telltale blush on her face.

Interesting.

‘Anyone need anything to drink?’ he asked.

‘Just water if you’re getting something for yourself,’ Kate said absently as she frowned at something she was reading.

‘Lucas?’

Lucas sighed and gave him an agonized look. ‘Why are you making yourself comfortable in my home?’

‘Fine, not getting you anything,’ Brian retorted. He was enjoying watching Lucas suffer, far too much, actually. But at the door to the kitchen, he turned around and saw that he had moved closer to Kate and that he was resting his palm on her knee. Her bare knee.

Discomfort that was close to something inexplicable, like rage, coursed through him. He gritted his teeth. Lucas looked up at him with a smirk on his face, and he knew what the bastard was doing. He was deliberately riling him up. He turned around to go to the kitchen because the joke was on him. Lucas. Kate was nothing to him.

Yes, he was attracted to her, and she was possibly attracted to him. But that was it. She was leaving in a few days, and nothing was going to happen between them.

But he hoped he was wrong. He pulled out a couple of beers for himself and Lucas and a bottle of water for Kate and brought them back out to the living room.

‘I don’t think you need to make Maude likeable,’ Kate was telling Lucas. She was pacing the living room, and Lucas was looking annoyed. ‘That’s where you’re getting stuck, right? Why did you make her adopt that puppy? She has no time for a puppy in her life!’

‘Yeah, but she comes across as grumpy,’ he said.

‘So? That’s who she is.’

‘You mean that’s who he is,’ Brian added. Kate looked up, surprised. She took the bottled water from him and uncapped it. He tossed one bottle to Lucas, who caught it deftly.

There was silence as they all drank. Kate turned to Lucas. ‘Is that true?’

‘What?’

‘That Maude is based on you?’

‘Do I look like a 55 year old woman to you?’ he asked belligerently.

She put her hands out in a placating manner. ‘Authors either end up modeling a character who is exactly like them, or who is the opposite of that.’

Lucas made a face. ‘Fine. No puppy.’

‘Just focus on the core of the story, Lucas. Don’t look at the peripheral things right now. This is the first draft. It’s going to be shitty. We’ll add the detailing later,’ she said in a reassuring tone as she sat down.

Lucas looked at her as if she was out of her mind. ‘You mean I’ll have to rewrite this?’ he asked hoarsely.
